Next Five #1 - Birds

New game I learned about--basically you grab a picture off of the internet and tell what happens next using five frames.

Character Sketches

Toying around with the idea of getting together a team to work on an animated film, so here's a bit of pre-production: some character sketches!

"Sand Castle"

This is a story about a boy who defends his sand castle from the rising tide.

When I started this, it was only supposed to be 10 frames or so, but when I got started more ideas just kept coming. By the end of it, the story was 60 frames!

This was an interesting project because I was trying to focus on speed and keeping loose with all of my drawings. I don't have a Cintiq anymore so these were drawn on a tiny Wacom Bamboo Tablet. It's a cute little guy, but it definitely makes it more difficult to keep your drawing nice and loose. C'est la vie!

Second Take on Tom Elowitz

Here's my second take on the character Tom Elowitz from the story that I'm writing. Overall, I'm liking this design over the first.

In the first design, Tom was too clean-cut looking. I was using Gene Kelly and Frank Sinatra as reference, but it didn't seem to fit. For this design, I used Stan Laurel and Roger Radcliffe (101 Dalmations) as reference.

Ethereal Cinematic Final Render (Scratch Voice)

Yep, about four weeks of work total. Lots and lots of Photoshop and After Effects.

I was pleased as punch to finish this part. Now, I have to do the rest!

Rough Ethereal Cinematic Footage

Some rough footage of the cinematic I'm making for Ethereal.

I painted all of the assets in Photoshop CS4, and I'm using After Effects CS4 to comp/animate.

The Lamp and the Firefly Animatic

Remember that animated film I was working on? Well Ethereal has been keeping me busy, so I haven’t had much time to work on it, but I was able to finish an animatic.

And despite what you might think, I didn’t get the idea from Pixar’s Luxo Jr. I actually found the inspiration for this while I at home over the summer. I was watching television when I noticed a firefly dancing outside of our window in the light of one of our table lamps. I thought this was kind of cute, so I decided to write a story about it.

With that said, I did watch Luxo Jr. a few times to study a bit some of the movement ;)
